If you’re a regular follower, you already know my boys are athletes. H plays college lacrosse and O plays high school football (and lacrosse again, after a three-year hiatus). To celebrate their on-field accomplishments, I often post video clips. It’s a lowkey #mombrag move, I know.
But truth be told, I’m not proud of their athletic accomplishments. I’m excited, sure, but proud isn’t the word I’d use because some of it is natural skill.
As a #sportsmom, what does make me proud is the effort they put in and the attitude they have while playing. As a (regular) mom, what makes me proud is their character — on and off the field.
H is a grinder and hustler with great game IQ. He’s also the consummate cheerleader for this teammates, hyping them up when they’re down. But more than that, he’s a good kid. He’s kind and compassionate, always looking out for the underdog or little guy. He’s funny and wise and, for the most part, has a good head on his shoulders.
O is more of a quiet leader, but he, too, has a positive impact on his teammates, squashing negativity and keeping kids accountable. He’s also funny and kind and a really good kid who (mostly) makes good choices.
As a parent — and not just a sports parent — seeing my boys display good sportsmanship and leadership is rewarding. And having another parent or coach/teacher/adult point out my boys’ strong character fills me with pride (and not just because it means I’m doing something right!).
Parenting is hard. Raising good, strong, kind boys is really hard — and also really important. My boys are FAR from perfect and they definitely know how to push my buttons, but I’m proud to say they’re not assholes … At least not most of the time.

Love O’s sweatshirt!! I got the shirt version for my wife. 🙂
Your comment about effort is spot on! That’s the most important lesson for my athletes because that translates to everything else they do in their lives.
So true, Tchaka. And now I need to know why O didn’t buy ME that shirt!
