Facebook Follies

Posted on March 25, 2026March 24, 2026 By lauren@laurendeweytarr.com

I’m probably going to lose some readers with this post, but I’m going to say it anyway … Some people are just stupid. Especially people on Facebook.

Okay, that may be a bit harsh. But I really am baffled by what some people post.

I use FB mostly to promote this blog. I typically scroll past 90% of what’s in my feed, but I do occasionally visit a few group pages.

For example, I use my town’s community page to find local service people. I follow my son’s college parents’ page to get campus news. And I sell or donate unneeded items on Marketplace and my town’s gifting page.

Nearly every time I’m on one of these group pages, I find myself asking: Why do people use Facebook instead of common sense—or for that matter, a trash can? Are people really this stupid?

Here are some real posts I’ve seen recently:

  • Someone selling (yes, selling—not donating) cracked dishware, a punctured bicycle tire, and dirty, ripped Uggs
  • Multiple moms arranging playdates for their college freshmen who “haven’t found their people yet” (and they’re using their children’s real names)
  • Someone asking for “urgent advice” on how to help a friend who was experiencing a brain bleed at that very moment

Proof I’m not making this sh*t up.

Seriously, what is wrong with people? Doesn’t anyone have common sense?

Sure, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But some things should just be thrown away—like worn-out Uggs. No one’s buying that crap.

And I get wanting to help your kids, especially when they’re struggling. But setting up playdates for 18-year-olds and divulging personal information (probably without their consent)? That’s a step too far, IMO. Plus, your kid is most likely mortified.

As for going online to a FB group to ask strangers what you should do in an emergency rather than calling 911 or driving to the nearest ER is just wild—and dangerous!

FB has a reputation for divisive politics, misinformation, and invasive ads. But no one is talking about the stupidity, and it’s mind-boggling to me.

Although … It is good blog fodder.
