It’s that time of year … Mallomars have officially hit grocery stores on Long Island, and Grace Dewey is at it again — clearing shelves and stocking her pantry.
If you’re new here, allow me to explain:
Grace Dewey is my 82(5/6)-year-old mother. Mallomars are a chocolate-covered marshmallow and graham cracker cookie made by Nabisco. They’re a seasonal treat available for only about 4 months of the year, beginning in September.
To say my mother is obsessed with Mallomars would be an understatement. The only thing she loves more is her five grandsons.
Every year, she goes to great lengths to secure as many boxes as she can — including making back-to-back trips and driving to multiple stores.
Think I’m exaggerating? Read my posts from 2022 and 2024 …
Believe me now?
It’s only been a few days since Mallomars made their appearance and my mother has already amassed 12 boxes.
That’s one dozen boxes of cookies … And she’s just getting started.
So how has she managed to purchase so many so quickly? Two words: New town.
In January, we moved my parents to a new home closer to my sister. The transition hasn’t been easy, but I think things are looking up.
Where they live now, grocery stores don’t enforce limits on how many Mallomars a person can buy. And, they cost less.
I call that the ultimate win-win for Grace Dewey … That is, until she’s banned from stores for wiping them out. Then, all bets are off.
Happy Mallomar Season to my mother and all those who celebrate 🙂
